The gold rush of 1851 set Melbourne on a course that ended in serious depression. But before that there was a boom of massive proportions, and the Colony of Victoria grew and prospered to an extraordinary degree, creating a world class city known as ‘Marvellous Melbourne’. As in other cases, a great boom produced a great bust.
